Bridge of Spies is a 2015 American historical dramatic thriller firm. Based on a real story about the 1960 U-2 incident during the Cold War, the film is about the story of an American lawyer James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks) who is entrusted to negotiate the release of a Russian spy who was in custody of the U.S, in exchange for an American pilot whose U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union and an America economic student who was arrested as a spy by Stasi.
“Bridge of Spies” has delivered an extremely powerful historical story with a real picture of the world after World War.
To begin with, the story is brilliantly directed, which makes audiences understand the situation even though they may not know that historical event. As a historical movie, it is serious and tense; however, there are still some comedy details that make the film less serious, while still at the same time deliver sharp dialogue.
Besides, as the film has won “Cinematographer of the Year” in the Hollywood Film Award, the beautiful cinematography work perfectly delivers a real picture about the world that time. We will see the totally different background of America and German after World War, that is, how wealth America was and how bad Germany had to suffer after the destruction of the wars. Especially the darkness in Germany’s society and the desperation of people there has been delivered in the realest way.
Tom Hanks – our Oscar star – got a great performance that almost steals the film. He completely brings back the legend lawyer James Donovan with such great dignity and conviction in the negotiation for freedom and justice.
Obviously, with the slowly pace, historical plot, and full of tensions, “Bridge of Spies” is not for everyone, it’s purely for adult viewers. It’s not just a regular movie which is easier to understand and easier to forget. That slowly pace, the way it builds character and tension, the way it conveys message might raise different perspectives about the film for each viewer, which may leave us some concerns to think about after the film.
I might say “Bridge of Spies” is what filming about. This film is a great mix of smart, witty, and serious details. Excellent performances, smart direction, great story, and beautiful cinematography work, you can’t expect anything more than those. If you are a fan of this genre, don’t miss it.
