Baywatch: Movie Review

Baywatch is a motion picture film directed by Seth Gordon, is based on the popular series created by Micheal Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Gregory Bonann that was on air from 1989-2001, with the original actors including superstars David Hasslehoff and Pamela Anderson. Screenplay for the film was written by Damian and Mark Swift, with the story written by Jay Scherick, David Ronn, Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant.

The film included a superstar cast of its own in comparison to the series, stars included Dwayne Johnson, as Mitch Buchannon and Zac Efron as the infamous Matt Brody with a supporting cast that included Priyanka Chopra as the villainous Victoria Leeds, as well as Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach and Jon Bass who added charisma and comedy to the action/detective film. With such a star studded cast, the film was witty, fit and lived up to the hype that had surrounded the film before its release.

Dwayne Johnson aka ‘The Rock’ played Mitch Buchannon, head lifeguard of the crime ridden Los Angeles Coast. He has saved numerous lives and is considered a hero within his crew and within the community. When he becomes aware of the growing number of people selling drugs on his turf, he turns in to a detective willing to risk his life to save those around him and the community. Overall Mitch is a well rounded guy, who also has the ability to run while carrying two refrigerators on his back (if you have watched the movie, you will understand this reference). With quality comedic banter, Mitch is a loveable character who will have the audience struggling to muffle a giggle at his one-liners directed at Zac Efron’s character, Matt Brody.

Zac Efron plays former Olympic gold medallist and ‘Vomit Comet’ who ends up at the Los Angeles Coast in search for a job, which he finds as a lifeguard alongside Mitch Buchannon. Their characters initially butt heads, but discover they must work together in order to save the beloved coast. Brody’s love interest, Summer (Alexandra Daddario), is also a lifeguard on the crew, without giving in to his wit and charm she is able to remain focused and is able to have a laugh at Brody’s expense.

Without giving too much away, the movie is exactly what you would expect from a huge blockbuster. A star studded cast, impeccable cinematography and witty one liners that keep you hooked on the far fetched storyline. The cast is all extremely good looking, with bodies that only Baywatch could produce with ‘slow-motion- scenes straight out of the 80’s hit. Pamela Anderson and David Hasslehoff make appearances throughout the film, linking it back to the series. Overall a quality comedy everyone will enjoy, with drama and dramatic action scenes to hold your attention.
